India’s Transformed Poverty Story

The World Bank has revised the International Poverty Line (IPL) from $2.15/day to $3.00/day (2021 PPP).
Despite this higher threshold, India's economic numbers showed a sharp reduction in poverty, acting as a global outlier.
India used a revised method of Modified Mixed Recall Period (MMRP) that reduced the global poverty count by 125 million, offsetting a significant portion of the increase.
With MMRP, India’s 2022–23 poverty rate under the new $3.00 line was 5.25%, and just 2.35% under the older $2.15 line.
